I added Google’s Blogger.com to the directory today.
I purposely omitted them when I was was first seeding links into the directory here because A. everybody knew about them, B. Google had not been adding on to the service although they keep it working well, C. Google is Big Tech and therefore evil IMHO, D. everyone was wondering, given “B” above, if Google would pull the plug on Blogger the way they had with so many services.
Well years later, Blogger is still running, it’s looking dated but it works and it’s still free (w/ads.) And a bunch of stuff got me rethinking listing it.
- 3rd World Bloggers – $1 a month for a paid blog might seem trivial to me, but that is a significant wage to somebody in the 3rd World or heck somebody who is poor in the 1st World! And I have seen this in my wanderings, people from the developing world rely on decent free services like Blogger. This is real important for balance on the Web.
- Big Old Blogger Blogs – I’ve run into a bunch of big massive blogs with lots of posts going way back in time and they still work! Not barely work, but work damn well. Some are abandoned and some still working just fine.
- Blogger Has Optional Comments – Not many new blog platforms have comments and that is lazy by developers and a flaw, because blogging and the internet are about conversations not people lecturing from soapboxes.
- In prep for this I logged in to my old Blogger account. It was still there. A lot of my old blogs and false starts going back to the ’00’s were still there waiting for me to return. No nagging emails, no threats of discontinuance of service lest I login, no shifting formerly free services behind paywalls, it’s all just there. And I could start a new blog in 5 minutes if I wanted.
- And I’m already listing WordPress.com, which has been monetizing formerly free services right and left, and moving in the wrong direction with their features. So I decided, if I’m going to keep listing WordPress.com I should probably list Blogger.com too.
So there you have it, I’ve wasted way too much time talking about evil Google’s Blogger and if you are still reading you wasted your time reading. But there you go, I was bored and it was on my mind.
